Sinclair Lewis

Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright. He is best known for his satirical novels criticizing American social institutions and the narrow-minded attitudes of many of his countrymen. Lewis gained fame with his novel "Main Street" (1920), which represented the disillusionment with small-town life. His other significant works include "Babbitt" (1922), "Arrowsmith" (1925), which received a Pulitzer Prize which Lewis refused, "Elmer Gantry" (1927), and "Dodsworth" (1929). Lewis was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, becoming the first American writer to receive the honor. His work often explored the complexities of the modern American experience, tackling themes of conformity, materialism, and cultural hypocrisy.
