William Porter

William Sydney Porter, known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American short story writer born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina, and passed away on June 5, 1910. He is renowned for his wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and clever twist endings. Porter's stories often depict ordinary people in various settings, from the bustling streets of New York City to the American West, and highlight the ironic and unexpected turns that life can take. O. Henry's work includes over 600 short stories, and some of his best-known works include "The Gift of the Magi," "The Ransom of Red Chief," and "The Last Leaf." Before turning to writing, he held various jobs, including being a bank teller and a pharmacist. His personal life was marred by difficulties, including a conviction for embezzlement that led to imprisonment, during which time he started to write short stories to support his daughter, Margaret. Despite his legal issues, O. Henry's talent for storytelling and his enduring themes of love, sacrifice, and the small ironies of everyday life have made him a beloved figure in American literature.
