The Field Guide is the first book in The Spiderwick Chronicles, a children’s fantasy series co-authored by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. Published in May 2003, this novel introduces readers to the Grace children—nine-year-old twins Jared and Simon, and their thirteen-year-old sister Mallory—who move with their mother into the dilapidated Spiderwick Estate in Maine.   Upon exploring their new home, the siblings discover a secret library and a mysterious, handwritten field guide hidden in the attic. This guide, created by their great-great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick, reveals the existence of a hidden world of faeries and fantastical creatures. As they delve deeper, the children encounter Thimbletack, a brownie residing in the house, who becomes agitated when his dwelling is disturbed. The Grace children soon realize that the magical world is both wondrous and perilous, and that the field guide holds secrets that could endanger them.
